ABOUT
Hi, I’m Rachel
I’m a marketer from Sheffield, UK and an avid boxing fan.
My love for the sport started when I first stepped into a boxing gym in 2017, as a naive 19 year old wondering “how hard could this really be?”.
Somehow, a swift reality check turned into 4 years of black eyes, pre-fight nerves, and stinking wraps, yet the prospect of having my hand raised in my next fight kept bringing me back each session.
Eventually, my professional and personal circumstances changed and a mediocre amateur record meant that boxing training took a complete nosedive.
Besides being a viewer, I thought I was done with the sport until a few of my former amateur teammates asked for help with promoting themselves on social media, writing press releases, and preparing for interviews, as they transitioned into the professional ranks.
I enjoyed every second of applying marketing to boxing and experienced far more success from this than I ever did competing.
This brings us to 2023, when I was looking for another way to make my mark on the boxing world again.
Whilst I follow all boxing, I’ve always had a special admiration for elite-level amateur and professional female boxers. They perform at the highest level despite wearing incorrectly fitting gloves, boxing on their periods, and facing misogyny.
We live in an exciting time where women’s boxing is continually breaking records and reaching new heights, with historic events like Taylor vs Serrano and Shields vs Marshall. So we should be striving for that same improved representation in who’s reporting on the sport.
With over 90% of sports articles being written by men and 85% of those being dedicated to male athletes, increasing women’s presence in sports journalism can only benefit the exposure and recognition hardworking sportswomen receive. Not to mention grow female participation at grassroots level, which is particularly important in a male-dominated sport like boxing.
My aim is to establish SHE BOXES as a reputable source of women’s boxing news, bringing a woman’s perspective to professional and Olympic bouts from around the world.
Ultimately, SHE BOXES was born out of a passion for boxing and female empowerment…and some of that same ignorance of “how hard could this really be?”
